Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore (IIM-B) which plans to expand its campus on the outskirts of city, has been provided with an alternate piece of land in Jigani hobli in Anekal taluk on outskirts of Bangalore, after the original allotment of land at Mahanthalingapur, also in Jigani, ran into a controversy.

The revenue department has issued a notification in this regard.

Earlier, the department notified 110 acres of land in Mahanthalingapur and an order had been issued stating that the notified land will be handed over to IIM-B for a period of 30 years on lease. But the IIM-B administration could not take possession of the land due to strong resistance from the local residents.

The district administration too expressed its opinion that it was legally not tenable to hand over the land to IIM-B as farmers belonging to scheduled caste and scheduled tribe were owned farmlands in the notified area and were dependent on farming for a livelihood for over 50 years.

“In the identified land farmers belonging to SC and ST were living for over 50 years. The government had even issued title deeds to them. On the other hand, the state government had given permission for quarrying so it is advisable to find an alternative land for IIM-B,” mentioned a notification from the revenue department.

The director of the institution wrote to the state government on November 27, 2012, requesting for an alternative land, as the institute was not in a position to take possession of the identified land. The deputy commissioner of Bangalore urban district then sent a new proposal to the state government on finding an alternative land to the IIM-B in the area.

The district administration found an alternative land having two plots in nearby area. As per the latest government order, IIM-B will get 110 acres of land on either side of Harohalli and Jigani road.

In its final order sanctioning the land on lease for 30 years, the state government also imposed some riders on the IIMB. According to the conditions, the institution can use the land only for the sanctioned purpose, and cannot sell, sub-lease or transfer the land without the permission of revenue department, the government had every right to use land for public cause in future, if such situation arose, without compensation the institution, and that the institution had take permission from the authorities concerned and others before starting any projects.
