The state pre-university education (PUE) department has extended the deadline for admission for the students of International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) seeking admissions to pre-university courses in the state till August 31.

The extended deadline is on the condition that the IGCSE students get 75% attendance at the end of the academic year.

The announcement comes as a relief to over 500 class X students of IGCSE who are awaiting the declaration of their examination results.

Having 75% attendance in each academic year is mandatory for both first and second PU students in the state.

According to officials, the same rule applies to students from other boards who join PU courses in the state colleges.

“We cannot change the existing rules. The rules, including mandatory attendance, apply to all the students. They should show 75% compulsory attendance to appear for the final examinations,” said R Shankar Narayan, director, PUE department.

Narayan added that department welcomed students from other boards like ICSE and CBSE. “We welcome those students who switch over to state board from other boards, but the condition is that they should follow the existing rules,” he said.

The IGCSE students, however, will miss out on one-and-half months of the academic year. The PU classes started in July first week.

The officials said the college authorities should make up for the lost attendance.

“They can conduct extra hours for these students and make up the attendance,” said Narayan.

Narayan also advised the IGCSE students aspiring to join the state board to appear in the November examinations instead of that held in May.
