For a stratup that is into application development, testing their products on multiple platforms and geographies is a challenge, considering the cost and time involved. However, with the emergence of crowdtesting, a concept derived from crowdsourcing, startups can test the applicability of their apps on different platforms and markets at half the cost and time.

Crowdtesting involves bringing together a group of testers from diverse geographies, backgrounds and experience on a common virtual platform, allowing app developers to test their apps on them at a faster, cheaper rate.

Testers range extensively in profiles and devices. From homemakers to people who are hardcore testers, it all depends on the need of developer. “Testers get paid depending on the number of issues pointed out and their criticality,” says Mittal, director and country head, Pass Brains, a crowd testing company.

The concept has gained immense popularity among startups as that usually find it hard to test their products or apps sufficiently on multiple platform and configure them appropriately before launching it in the market.

As a result, most fail in their first attempt, thereafter shutdown. Though there are no industry estimates, experts say almost 65% of startups fail because of the lack of preparedness before launching a product or an app.

“Not all startups have the capacity to reach out to testers around the world, or invest in different devices to test the app. This is where the concept of crowd testing comes to the rescue,” says Mittal
“Anybody with a smartphone or PC can register and become part of the crowd-testing party. Also, based on your budget, testers from around the world can be arranged,” says Raj thirumal, CEO, STC.

Crowdtesting is emerging as a side profession. Even women who unable to work full time owing to family commitments are enrolling themselves as crowdtesters.
