Having given up their jobs for domestic reasons, Shubha, Sujatha and Mamtha of Malleswaram wanted to spend their free time doing something productive and useful for children. They opened a children’s library in a rented house on 11th Main, 12th Cross, Malleswaram five years ago.

“I was working in a software company. I had to quit the job to look after my child. It was the same case with my friends Sujatha and Mamtha,” said Shubha Hebbar.

The library has over 6,000 books (picture books, reader levels, general knowledge, quiz, classics, mystery, adventure, comics, encyclopedias, magazines, timelife series) over 500 jigsaw, educational and wooden puzzles, creative blocks, board games etc, and over 500 titles to choose from in the multimedia section. The trio hope to revive reading habits in children through the library.

“We want children to utilise their leisure time productively,” she said.

How it works
Membership starts from Rs150 per month. There are different plans for varied needs.
The library also conducts activities like drawing, painting, crafts, story time, shloka, Bhagavad Gita, carnatic, light music, flute, chess for all levels, science programmes.

“We also organise other programmes such as chess tournaments , fun/educational trips, puppet shows, magic shows, informative sessions by professionals , summer camps, etc,” she said.
The three women incur an monthly expenditure of Rs10,000 for the maintenance of the library, which includes the rent and electricity bill.

“We invest the remaining amount on books. We are not profit. The library should be useful for children to spend their time meaningfully,” she said.
