Hospitals deserted during Bangalore bandh

With the State wide bandh called on Thursday, the city hospitals witnessed a drop in the number of out-patients. Few patients had also cancelled their appointment with their doctors for Thursday fearing any untoward incident.

Government run Jayanagar General Hospital which receives an average of 800 out-patients on a daily basis, witnessed a drastic drop on Thursday.

"The number of outpatients in the hospital was less by almost 90 per cent on Thursday. We get patients in our hospitals from across the city and as far as Kanakapura and Anekal. Learning about the bandh they might have put off their visit to be on safer side," a hospital administrative official informed dna. 63-year-old Manjunath, a resident of Banaswadi and ailing with knee pain had to meet the orthopedic at Jayanagar General Hospital said that he would go next week as he feared travelling during the bandh.

At National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) too the number of out-patients seemed to be marginally less on Thursday, as compared to normal days. Dr VL Sateesh, medical superintendent said: "Following the bandh, the inflow of out-patients was marginally less. Apart from the patients, a few female staff members who stay far informed us in the morning that they are not getting any public transport, hence they were not able to report to work. Anticipating such problems, we had posted those doctors and nurses staying in the quarters."

The number of out-patient was reduced considerably at yet another government run Victoria Hospital on Thursday. On an average, the hospital receives over 1,000 patients everyday.The number of out-patients had dropped at BGS Global Hospitals as well.

However, the out-patient department at Apollo Hospital seemed to function as normal as any other day. The number of out-patient coming in was normal as always, irregardless of the bandh.
