The Congress high command has given in to the demand from senior party leaders in the state for a committee to ensure coordination between the party and the government, indicating that the free run chief minister Siddaramaiah has had is coming an end soon.

KPCC President G Parameshwara, who was not invited to the launch of flagship programme of the party to provide 30 kg of rice at Rs 1 per kg to the poor, announced the decision of the high command on Thursday.

“The high command has given green signal to the formation of coordination committee. We have also sent a report as sought by the high command about the structure of the coordination committee,” he said.

The state party chief said the president of the committee would be an AICC general secretary who would  be named by the high command. The core committee at New Delhi will also decide on the number of members and its role.

Similar coordination committees would be formed at district level too, to ensure coordination between district in-charge ministers and party leaders according to the instructions of the central leadership, he underlined.

The move to set up the state-level coordination committee implies that the senior Congress leaders in the state who have been neglected by Siddaramaiah will have a say in the government.

At the same time, the party also tried to contain the influence of Siddaramaiah’s supporters who have got plum posts, by forming coordination committees at district levels.

Opposition parties have already ridiculed the idea of forming coordination committee. Former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy said it was “weird” for the Congress to set up such a committee when it was ruling with a majority in the assembly. He stressed that such arrangements are only seen where a coalition government is in place.

Sources revealed that there was hectic lobbying between Siddaramaiah and Parameshwara to pack the coordination committee with their followers.

The two leaders were also jockeying for power to select candidates for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.
