Heavy rainfall in Maharashtra leads to flooding in Belgaum

Owing to heavy rainfall in the Konkan region of Maharashtra, Belgaum district has been severely flooded.

Six villages—Yadur, Kallol, Bhojawadi, Karadaga, Jatra and Bhimsahi—in Chikkodi taluk of the district have submerged in water as 62,000 cusecs of water has been released from Rajapur dam in Maharashtra. Besides, the bridges between Sadalaga-Borgaon, Jatrat-Bhimashi, Kallok-Yadur, Akkol-Sidnal, Karadaga-Bhoj and Bhojawadi-Hunnargi too have drowned in the Krishna river.

However, Chikkodi Tahsildar Rajashekhar Dambal said that as alternative roads were available between the affected villages, there was no problem to reach them.

“All the 12 gates of Hipparagi barrage were opened and 53,000 cusecs of water has been released from Almatti dam to avoid untoward incidents in the region,” he added.

Meanwhile, people of the aforementioned villages have claimed that the water flow is on the rise in the river, giving them a hard time. Besides, life is affected in Khanapur and Belgaum also as it has been receiving incessant rains.

Sources in the Met department said Belgaum received 24 mm of rain while Khanapur received 37 mm in the past 24 hours.

“It may rain heavily in the next 48 hours,” they said.

According to Maharashtra officials, Nouja has received 133 mm of rain, while Koyna received 76 mm, Mahabaleshwar 92 mm, Varana 57 mm, Kolhapur 22 mm and Sangli 07 mm.
