The north division police cracked 194 cases and arrested 147 people in the past three months, and valuables worth Rs4.44 crore have been recovered from them.

The recovered property includes 4.918 kg of gold jewels worth Rs1.48 crore, cash of Rs51.52 lakh, 100 two-wheelers worth Rs43.98 lakh and other goods.

In one of the cases, the Peenya police arrested a woman who stole gold jewels belonging to her house owner. The accused has been identified as Bhagya, who along with her husband, was living in a rented house in Mallasandra.

The house owner Gopal, a contractor, was living in the same building. Bhagya had befriended Gopal’s wife Padma after learning that the latter had gold ornaments at home.

On December 13, Bhagya went to Padma’s house on the pretext of giving her biriyani and hung around for a while. When Padma went to have a bath, Bhagya, taking advantage of this situation, took the almirah keys and stole 170 grams of gold ornaments kept in it.

“After Padma finished bath, Bhagya left the house. The theft came to light when Padma opened the almirah as she wanted to go to a function and found the valuables missing. Later, a complaint was filed. When the police went to the spot, Bhagya was behaving suspiciously. When the police told they wanted the finger prints of all the accused, Bhagya told the police that her finger prints will be there on almirah as she regularly visited the house. Then the finger prints matched with her and when interrogated, she confessed that she had committed the theft,” the police said.

She had kept the stolen jewels at her mother’s house in Vijayanagar, from where it was recovered, the police added.

4 held for murder on New Year’s eve Peenya police arrested four people in connection with the brutal murder of a 22-year-old youth, who was stabbed 24 times during a party on December 31.

Javed, Sridhar, Arjan and Venkatesh, all are residents of Muneshwara Block in T Dasarahalli in Peenya, are the accused. They have been accused of murdering their friend Umesh Khanna, also a resident of Muneshwara Block.

Khanna was a BCom graduate. He was unemployed and allegedly involved in an attempt to murder and assault case.

According to the police, Khanna’s friend Jeevan alias Appi had organised a party in Muneshwara Block on December 31 night. During the party, Jeevan and Khanna quarreled over an old issue and Khanna allegedly hurled abuses at Jeeven.

Following this, Jeevan and his associates attacked Khanna and murdered him.

“Javed and Arjun have criminal background. We gathered information about who all attended the party and nabbed some of them, who later confessed to the murder,” the police.
