Launching the sale of five-kg cooking gas cylinders at market price here on Saturday, oil minister Veerappa Moily promised to make the nation self-reliant in fuel by 2030.

Under the scheme, 5-kg cylinders will be sold through select petrol pumps in Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai, and will be available on minimal documentation.

Moily also announced the launch of an inter-company cooking gas portability scheme for consumers.

Highlighting the initiatives taken by the petroleum ministry to enable customers to access the LPG cylinders easily, Moily said: "Very soon, we will enable customers to book cylinders through internet and will make it mandatory for the agencies to deliver the cylinder within three days of booking it. The option of cylinder portability will inspire a spirit of competitiveness among the gas distribution agencies and, thereby, improve the agencies. The new initiative to sell gas cylinders directly at petrol filling stations will help the migrant population as it will enable one to obtain a gas connection instantly with minimum documentation".

"This scheme is expected to be a boon to migratory population such as students, IT professionals, BPO employees and persons with odd duty timings as it would provide them the flexibility to pick up cylinders and obtain subsequent refills at time of their choice as Petrol Stations are open for longer hours. Upon completion of the pilot, the facility would be extended to other towns and cities," said Oil Minister Veerappa Moily.

The cylinders will be sold at done (Equipment + Product) at non-domestic rates with/without regulator for the first time at Rs1,000 plus taxes for the cylinder and Rs250 plus taxes for the regulator. The cost of product and refills i.e. cost of LPG will be as per non-domestic rates applicable in the market.

Moily has further added that Bangalore would be third city which would have CNG supply. He said the Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) has already drawn a CNG line till Chitradurga and it will be drawn till Bangalore by taking a deviation.

"The state government should work towards running the BMTC, KSRTC buses and other vehicles on CNG. We are also working towards supplying gas to households through pipelines", Moily said.
