A dispute over road obstruction in Indiranagar near Defence Colony on Saturday night saw former MLA LR Shivarame Gowda and former Indian cricketer Venkatesh Prasad get into a heated argument. Both the parties filed complaints and counter-complaints against each other.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that Prasad’s wife and a local resident Indira Shastri, one of the complainants, were assaulted.

What appeared to be a matter of road obstruction by the MLA and his family members—who were leaving after attending a house-warming ceremony—ended up getting blown out of proportions after Prasad and his wife Jayanthi took offence to a stream of cars blocking the road.

About 9.30 pm, Gowda and his family members were leaving the venue, when Prasad and his wife were passing through the same spot. Prasad found his way obstructed by Gowda’s cars.

Reportedly, an argument ensued as Prasad began honking incessantly to force the others to clear the way. Reportedly, Prasad continued honking despite Gowda’s family members and aides trying to convince him to be a little patient so they can leave the venue.

The police said that at this juncture, Prasad’s wife Jayanthi entered the fray, allegedly stating: “You don’t know who we are!”

Incidentally, a resident of the locality who stays right opposite where the housewarming ceremony was taking place, Indira Shastri, too jumped into the fray, siding with Prasad and his wife. She said she had initially interfered to resolve the issue, but then alleged that she was assaulted by Gowda’s men.

It is not clear if any violence took place, but Indira has filed a complaint with the Indiranagar police, alleging that Gowda’s aides misbehaved with her and Jayanthi. She has alleged insult and assault on her and Jayanthi with intent to outrage their modesty.

Gowda’s daughter, Bhavya, too, filed a complaint against Prasad, Jayanthi and Indira with Indiranagar police, alleging wrongful restraint and criminal intimidation. Both the parties withdrew the complaints later in the day.

Additional commissioner of police (law and order), T Suneel Kumar, confirmed the incident although the nature of assault—and if at all it took place—remains unclear. The police officials who reached the spot to witness the incident told DNA that Indira Shastri was heard using abusive language against Gowda and his kin.

The police recorded the proceedings on a video camera and will use the footage in the investigation.
