Bangalore is going to be the first city in south India to have a crematorium for pets. The crematorium will start functioning in February, near Sumanahalli, Magadi Road.
Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) had taken up the construction project for this special crematorium in July 2013. The construction was expected to be complete in January 2015 but got delayed as the installation of the incinerators was put on hold. BBMP mayor Shanthakumari visited the construction site on Saturday, and directed the contractor to conclude the work by first week of February.
The crematorium has two incinerators – one for dogs and cats and the other for cattle. According to N Vijaya Kumar, executive engineer (Projects), BBMP, Raja Rajeswari Nagar Zone, the crematorium is constructed at a cost of Rs 2.65 crore and has capacity to cremate nearly 20 carcasses of livestock, per day. The civic body has not however taken a decision on the fee structure for cremating pets and livestock yet.
Speaking with iamin, Dr R Lokesh, Karuna Animal Welfare Association, welcomed BBMP’s initiative and said that they have been demanding BBMP to set up four crematoriums for pets in Bangalore since 2002 but now they are happy to know that BBMP has made arrangements to open a crematorium for pets near Sumanahalli.
