The legislative assembly and the council were brought to a standstill on Wednesday as opposition parties attacked the Congress, following the death of a farmer outside the assembly.

As chief minister Siddaramaiah and other ministers rushed to KLE Hospital, the assembly session resumed only by 4.30 pm. When Siddaramaiah spoke about the action taken by the government for the benefit of sugarcane growers, former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa alleged that the government was responsible for the farmer’s suicide.

This marked the commencement of a blame game between the opposition and the ruling party. Yeddyurappa was joined by the BJP members in attacking the ruling, in retaliation to which, Siddaramaiah directly held the BJP government responsible for the death.

“If you could have taken proper and timely action on this regard, the problem could have been solved in the past itself. Everyone knows what Yeddyurappa did to farmers. Don’t you remember the two farmers who were killed in the firing ordered by Yeddyurappa-led government,” he thundered.

The assembly turned chaotic after Siddaramaiah made the statement. Speaker Kagodu Timmappa had to appeal to all party members to offer condolence to the dead farmer, before the situation was brought under control.

Compensation

Siddaramaiah announced a compensation of `10 lakh to the dependents of the farmer who committed suicide and also announced ex-gratia of `150 per tonne to all sugarcane growers.
Also, the BJP, JD(S) and KJP have assured a compensation of `5 lakh each to the farmer’s family.
