Karnataka Upa Lokayukta Justice Subhash B Adi, on Wednesday, directed Sonia Narang, superintendent of police, Lokayukta, to investigate the nexus between BBMP officials and advertisement lobby that caused a huge revenue loss to the civic body.

Justice Subhash had issued a notice to Mayor N Shantha Kumari and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) commissioner, to respond to the preliminary report dated 2-2-2015, on March 6 at 11.30 am, in person.

Justice Subhash expressed disappointment over the perfunctory attitude of BBMP joint commissioners and revenue inspectors towards collecting revenue from advertisement agencies that put up hoardings, flexes and banners across the city.

Justice Subhash talking to iamin said, “BBMP has become deaf and dumb in this matter. Looking at the way in which the advertisement section is working in BBMP, there could be hardly any action expected. The officials and some vested interest persons have ruined the civic body."

It may be recalled that Justice Subhash had prepared a preliminary report on the menace of illegal banners, hoardings and flexes in the city on February 2. He sent the report to Mayor Shantha Kumari and BBMP commissioner M Lakshminarayana. The Upa Lokayukta expected the mayor and commissioner to respond to the preliminary report by February 16. “Neither the mayor nor the commissioner responded to the preliminary report. It appears that, they have also no interest in eradicating the menace of illegal advertisement in Bangalore,” Justice Subhash said.

In the preliminary report, Justice Subhash indicated a huge loss of revenue to the tune of Rs 800 to Rs 1,000 crore per year to the BBMP.
