Public expectations abound Siddaramaiah, who took charge as the chief minister of the state today. When dna spoke to some of the academicians and health experts to find out what their expectations from the new government were, good governance, quality healthcare and better educational facilities were the unanimous replies.

“We expect Siddaramaiah to improve the quality of education. It cannot be improved by the vice-chancellor, registrar and ministers alone. Only a teacher can do it. It is an immediate need to provide quality training to teachers to empower them,” said Thimmappa, former vice-chancellor (V-C) of Bangalore University (BU).

Meanwhile, the literature fraternity of the state expect the CM to uphold Kannada at state schools.

“We want the CM to uphold Kannada at state schools by making it compulsory at school education,” said former president of Kannada Sahityha Parishad, Nallur Prasad.
On the health front, experts from the medical field expect the CM to provide quality and affordable health services.
“We want universal health insurance. The poor still don’t have access to good healthcare. We want the government to concentrate on primary healthcare and preventive healthcare systems like vaccination, pre-natal and anti-natal care and clean water. We also want better nutrition for children,” said Dr Sudharshan Ballal, medical director of Manipal Hospital.
“I want the government to encourage micro-health insurance schemes for the poor. I also want to see that women and child nutrition are taken in as top priorities. The new government can rope in the private sectors for this and we are willing to help the government deliver better services,” said Dr Bujangh Shetty, medical director of Narayana Netralaya.
