The response to a website that offers textbooks to engineering students on rent indicates that there is quite a demand for the service.

Rentmytext.in was launched in September and has already registered more than 100 subscriptions. CEO and founder of the website, Vishesh Jayawanth, said they get a couple of orders every day. He said one can save 60% of the cost of textbooks by availing of their service. On an average, a student will need to spend Rs25,000 to buy books for the entire course. Through the website, one can take the books on rent for Rs9,000.

Jayawanth, a third-generation entrepreneur, said they have been getting many queries from students who are particular to know how they can save 60%. “We have got a lot of queries where they are interested in knowing the background of the entrepreneurs. We’ve had many come to our office to check it out,” he said. Many teachers have also been enquiring if they can rent books, for which a plan is being set up.

There are three packages available. They are: VTU-recommended package, popular package and pick-and-choose package.

Jayawanth said much research has gone into finalising the books that make each package. For this, views of subject teachers and former students were taken into consideration. Most of the orders have been coming from Bangalore, Mysore and Tumkur.

The concept works on the model of a library. However, here it is only upon the completion of a semester/exam that the student has to return the books. The website has tied up with India Post to collect the books after the course.

They are also working on getting it collected personally. To check the damage of books, each book has a barcode sticker. If a student returns a book in a damaged condition, he/she will have to give a replacement or pay the MRP of the book.

Currently, the service providers have about 3,500 engineering textbooks of VTU. Books of first and second semester are in stock, while the books of other semester will be available soon, Jayawanth said. He said there are plans to make available books of medical and dental courses too.
