In an attempt to escape from the police, a group of inebriated youngsters drove their car into Lalbagh and crashed on to the railings near the iconic Glass House on Saturday night.

The group of six youngsters, some of whom were drivers, were returning from a party at a local bar and restaurant when they spotted traffic police stopping vehicles near the Lalbagh West Gate for checking cases of drunken driving.

Panic-stricken, the driver of the car, Prem Kumar, 22, rashly steered the vehicle into Lalbagh, before losing control and crashing into the railings near the Glass House.

After the crash, the car got stuck in a swamp and as the youngsters were unable to pull the car out of it, they called their friends, who were in another car, to help them out.

However, their efforts proved futile as the police, informed by the watchman of Lalbagh and some passersby about the incident, arrived in time at the spot and arrested them.

On interrogation, police found that the youth were from Siddapura and Hoskote, among other places. They confessed to the police that they did not have any criminal intentions behind driving into Lalbagh and that they did it out of sheer panic.

The Siddapura police registered a case of trespassing against the youth, while the Wilson Garden traffic police have registered a case of drunken driving against Prem Kumar and another person named Guru Prasad.
