Selection for best teacher awards at state and national levels will be tougher this year. The state department of public instructions will tighten the selection process, and has directed aspirants not to attach recommendation letters along with their applications. The stringent selection process this year would include one-on-one interviews with applicants.

Devprakash, director primary education, told dna: “We have introduced the new measures mainly to avoid selecting undeserving nominees, and to get first hand information about candidates and their achievements.” Till last year, there was no interview and applications with recommendation letters were accorded priority.

The department had issued a 25-page circular to all deputy directors for public instructions (DDPI), which clearly mentions that teachers recommended by anybody or found influencing the selection process would be ineligible for selection. Action would be take action against the headmaster who had referred his/her application to government for award. The DDPI concerned too would be penalised.

Teachers working at schools affiliated to the state government can apply for the awards, but they should have five years of experience teaching in rural schools to be eligible for selection. Furthermore, applicants should have put in 210 working days in the school in the previous academic year. There should not be any departmental inquiry against the applicants, who may not have a history of rejecting any government/department order.

“This includes the order for evaluation and examination works. If any teacher who had opposed the department order will not be entertained for awards,” an official said.

Meanwhile, officials also mentioned that the department is planning to revise the method of inviting applications for awards. “Inviting applications for awards is embarrassing. So, in the coming years, we will direct the Block Education Officers and DDPIs to identify eligible teachers based on their academic and other achievements,” the official said.
