Residents of Doddagunte and Cox Town were on a high on Thursday, after receiving news that Balaji Wines, a wine shop which had become a nuisance for them, was going to shifted from their area.

The deputy commissioner of Bangalore Urban, in a order dated Aug 27, 2013 (JBNR/09/2012-13), had directed the deputy commissioner (excise), Bangalore District (east), to take measures to shift Balaji Wines from MM Road in Doddakunte, Cox Town, with immediate effect.

“I am directing the shifting of Balaji Wines in the interest of peace and safety of public in and around the wine store as per the Section 5(4)(a) of Karnataka Excise Licences (General Conditions) Rules 1967,’’ said the DC.

The residents of Doddagunte and Cox Town have been demanding authorities concerned to direct the owner of Balaji Wines to shift the shop since it has become a nuisance for them. They had held dharnas to convince the excise officials of the need to shift the wine shop.

The then minister for excise MP Renukacharya, responding to MLA S Raghu’s letter, had also directed the deputy commissioner of excise to make arrangements for the shifting of the wine shop. MLA Raghu wrote a letter to the deputy commissioner, Bangalore Urban, (No. CVR/MLA/428/2013-14, dated 17-7-2013) to cancel the licence issued to Balaji Wines in the interest of residents.

Police inspector of Pulakeshinagar Police Station had also informed the excise commissioner on June 18 about the possible law and order problems which could arise if the excise department failed to take measures to shift the wine shop.

However, the excise commissioner, Bangalore Urban, issued an order allowing the appeal by the appellant and set aside the impugned order No. EXE/Sa.Du/JBNR/09/2012-13, dated 15.6.2013 passed by the respondent (deputy commissioner of excise, Bangalore Urban, East). The order directed the respondent to consider the application of the appellant for renewal of his CL-2 licence for the year 2013-14 and hold a proper enquiry and look into the issues of morality, tranquility, decency or safety of public and also to verify the objectionable places as claimed by the caveator and pass appropriate order in accordance with law after providing an opportunity to the appellant and to the objectors.

Expressing happiness over the deputy commissioner’s order to shift Balaji Wines, NS Ravi, president, Bharathinagar Residents’ Welfare Association, said residents would be able to live peacefully and women would be able to walk on MM Road without any fear.  Meanwhile, C Manjula, excise inspector, said the excise officials would take measures to seal Balaji Wines after consulting with higher authorities.
