Young women are being increasingly diagnosed with diabetes, shows data put out by a Mumbai-based diagnostic centre.

In its ‘preventive health check-up report’, Indus Health Plus found high sugar levels among women between the age group of 25 and 35. The data was collected from July 2012 to September 2013.

“Of the 12,633 women who came to us for preventive health check-up, 65% were diagnosed with diabetes. More than 50% of these were working women,” says Amol Naikawdi,  preventive healthcare specialist with the centre.

He said the data showed that young women, who tested positive for high sugar levels, were from the multinational companies and information technology industry, with little physical activity at work.

Diabetologist Shashank Joshi, who consults at Lilavati Hospital, Mumbai, said multiple factors make urban working women susceptible to type-2 or maturity-onset diabetes. “Lack of sleep is a major reason that makes urban working women more prone to type-2 diabetes. They are so busy juggling work and home that they don’t get time to exercise,” said Dr Joshi, adding that a carbhohydrate-rich diet only worsens things.

Women who have diabetes are at particularly high risk for heart problems. Besides, women who have type-2 diabetes are at a higher risk for glaucoma.

Dr Hemraj Chandalia who consults at Jaslok Hospital,  Mumbai, speaks of how genetic vulnerability and environmental factors translate into a deadly combination, which results in high incidence of diabetes cases. “While Indians are genetically prone to diabetes, the key to skirt the problem is improving one’s lifestyle. Women with abdominal fat and having family history of diabetes should be more careful.”
