This is the sort of dedication with which the police can win accolades and respect from the public. Swiftly reacting to cries for help from a man being assaulted and robbed by a gang near ITC Gardenia Hotel on February 17 midnight, a police Hoysala team from SR Nagar jurisdiction not just rushed to the victim’s help but also gave a relentless chase to the gang members escaping in a Maruti 800 car. This helped the police to nab one of the gang members, who in turn spilled the beans on his accomplices to help the police nab two more a couple of days later.

The arrested gang member Sai Prasad, 23, has subsequently spilled the beans during interrogations which helped the police to track down two more of the gang members on February 19 (one is identified as Sunil Kumar, alias ‘Fuel’, 23, while the other’s name has been withheld) and the police are now confident of busting the entire gang suspected to be eight-strong.

Interestingly, the man who was targetted near IT Gardenia Hotel would have been the 13th victim of the gang on that day. The gang members, in a serial robbing spree had already targeted 12 other people in Ashok Nagar, Cubbon Park, Wilson Garden, SJ Park, Upparpet and SR Nagar police station limits.

The 13th victim, a sportsman on his way home from Kanteerva Stadium nearby, could well have fallen victim had the Hoysala team failed to hear his screams from help when the gang members were assaulting him to force to part with his valuables.

However, the attempt was foiled when the Hoysala team spotted the gang beating the man up. On spotting the hoysala team approaching, Sai Prasad, Sunil Kumar and six others sped away in their Maruti 800 car, but the Hoysala team gave a relentless chase.

In a style straight out of the films, the Hoysala cops chased the escaping gang members and caught up with them. But in their desperate bid to avoid being caught, the gang members rammed their car into the Hoysala jeep which sustained 25% damage. At this point, Sai Prasad and two others got out of the car and started running. The police then gave chase on foot and nabbed Sai Prasad near Woodlands Hotel on Rajaram Mohan Roy Road. The others, however, managed to escape in their car and on foot although an SR Nagar beat constable and Ashok Nagar police inspector SH Murali gave chase right up till Madivala, but in vain.

Police interrogations forced Sai Prasad to reveal the whereabouts of the others, based on which Sunil Kumar was nabbed in Majestic area two days later.
Kumar’s interrogation also helped the police nab one more gang member whose name has not yet been disclosed. But the kingpin, said to be a man named Kiran Kumar, is yet to be nabbed.

With the arrests of three, the police managed to solve 16 cases of assault and robbery committed since February 8. The police have also managed to seize two Maruti 800 cars, 14 mobile phones and cash (quantity undisclosed) from the gang. It is also learnt that Sai Prasad had spent 20 days in jail as ‘Hemanth Kumar’ before being released on bail on February 7. A day later he and his gang members intensified their criminal activities which reached its peak on February 17.

The gang’s modus operandi involved targeting people walking or motoring alone on desolate stretches in the night, and threatening to kill them if they did not part with their valuables.
