Female corporators are up in arms over what they see as the insensitivity of the BBMP to safety of girls in BBMP schools. They are angry over the Palike’s blase attitude to their demand that security be heightened at BBMP schools to check harassment of girls by rowdy elements, and that the girls be imparted self-defence training to counter harassers.

Soon after the rape and death of the paramedic girl student at New Delhi, women corporators were up in arms in the Palike meeting, demanding steps for providing improved security for girl students of Palike schools.

While HSR Layout ward corporator Latha Narasimhamurthy demanded that the commissioner introduce self-defence classes for the girl students in the BBMP schools, Moodalapalya ward corporator N Shanthakumari highlighted the need for security personnel in the BBMP-managed schools and colleges.

Female corporators are fuming over what they see as the lack of response from from the  Mayor and commissioner to their demand. What fuels their anger is the silence of the Mayor and the commissioner over their demands.

“The Palike has become totally insensitive and I expect no action,” Shanthakumari told DNA.

“I have seen lot of anti-socials teasing school girls. Sometimes, they throw stones through windows of the classrooms at girl students. I have called police several times to take action against the miscreants. If the BBMP deputes a security guard to each school and colleges, then such acts can be stopped . But there is nobody to hear our plea,” she said.

Latha Narasimhamurthy said she, along with some NGOs, will organise self-defence classes in five government schools coming under her ward, but is livid over what she sees as the inactivity on part of the BBMP standing committee on education.  “Till now, the committee has taken no action. I  demand immediate action from the chairperson,” she said.

Contacted by DNA, chairperson B Govindharaju said he was yet to discuss the issue with the BBMP education department officials.

“The committee will decide on taking up special classes on self-defense discussing with the officials and send it to Commissioner’s approval,” he said, adding philosophically: “Implementation of any proposal in BBMP takes time.”

Asked about the number of girl children studying in BBMP-managed educational institutions, he fumbled for an answer, and blurted out: “18,260.” The actual number is 10,889.
