Amidst the multiple hackathons happening in the city, a new hackathon, aimed at bringing out solutions in the healthcare space, especially in the area of maternal and childcare has been launched in the city. Called Jugaad-a-thon, this hackathon brought together 250 clinicians, engineers and entrepreneurs for finding solutions to address mother and child care challenges in India.

After two days of work by participants, 34 potential solutions were presented, which ranged from new tools for antenatal care to disruptive technologies for newborn asphyxia.

Some solutions included a mobile app for early diagnosis of developmental delays in children, affordable wearable device that reminds pregnant women about key milestones in pregnancy when they need to see medical professionals.

According to Vikram Damodaran, director, healthcare innovation, India, and GE Healthcare South Asia, the hackathon is a completely new experience, and "we believe co-creation of solutions can accelerate affordable healthcare innovation. We hope to do more jugaad-a-thons to promote innovation and co-creation in the healthcare industry."

"We are focused on finding impactful and innovative ways to provide care to women and children here," said Elizabeth Bailey, director of the Consortium for Affordable Medical technologies (CAMTech) at Massachusetts General Hospital's Center for Global Health, which is participating in the hackathon.

In some of the other hackathons organised by CAMTech across the US, Uganda and India, over 1,000 innovators have participated in the past, creating a wide range of new technologies to address problems like newborn asphyxia, postpartum haemorrhage, cervical cancer among others.

According to Soura Bhattacharyya, chief of Medtech at Glocal Healthcare, hackathons help become part of a unique community of innovators, and is central to improving the lives of millions.
