As Bangalore shifts its focus towards recycling and upcycling, a garbage-afflicted local crowd has decided to go green this December. As part of the celebrations, some of the city dwellers are passing environmental-friendly messages with a variety of Christmas trees made of recyclable and upcyclable materials as the medium.

The Mar Thoma Syrian Church on Primrose Road has erected a Christmas tree made of recycled materials — bamboo and paper were the raw materials used. The tree was not only a visual treat for the visitors, but also a lesson for the Bangaloreans to recycle and reuse.

Apart from eco-friendly materials like jute, a few enthusiasts even braved to use waste materials to build the trees and raise festive spirits. A pub, Moscow Mule erected a tree using cast away beer cans -- and it turned out to be a major attraction in Koramangala. The tree is over 12 feet tall.

"We used 582 beer cans to build the tree, and the whole idea was conceived by the pub's management," said Raghavendra, its manager.

While churches have embellished their premises with Christmas trees and decorations, boutique stores, hotels and even pubs are not far behind in giving their facade a face-lift. Some of them tried to be innovative by applying new thoughts and ideas to attract the attention of the passersby.

Iris, a boutique on Lavelle Road, displayed a collection of Christmas trees made of colourful and fragrant potpourri. The trees were designed by a French designer, Marion Goody.

"Since the Christmas season is on, we planned something different this time, and when Kiran Ranga, managing director of the IRIS boutique, gave us the idea of making unique potpourri Christmas trees, we started it instantly," said Lisa Mukhedkar, the co-owner of Restore Solutions, which is the boutique’s official designer.

Funskool conducted a contest for building the tallest Christmas tree using Lego building blocks at Orion Mall on December 15 and 16. The tallest tree was over 18 feet.
