Teachers and students of Sudarshan Vidya Mandir, where 26-year-old Roopa Anand used to teach, are not able to come to terms with the death of the jovial kindergarten teacher –– the city’s first swine flu victim.

“This school has lost a caring teacher. I have lost a dear friend,” Hema Narayanan, principal of Sudarshan Vidya Mandir said. “She was on leave from school for a week but her death due to swine flu was a rude shock.”

Padma Priyatha, a lower kindergarten teacher said, “We don’t know how she succumbed to the flu. She was away from school for a week, during which time, we don’t even know if she travelled anywhere to have contracted the illness.”

The demise of the young teacher has created a void among the school faculty. Sai Prasanna, a teacher of lower kindergarten, with her eyes welling with tears said, “I always admired her. She had a great ability to keep the students entertained while teaching. Kids always loved her. She was an artist, a dancer and was extremely enterprising.”

Rupa is survived by her husband and two sons, Sanjith Krishnan and Krithik Krishnan, who study in lower kindergarten and first grade, respectively, in the same school.
Jayanagar-based school has been declared closed for at least a week in mourning and to sanitise the building.

“We have taken all the necessary precautions. To raise awareness among the parents and children, we are sending more handouts and circulars,” she said. “There are no other cases so far, everyone is fine. But the health authorities have advised us to subject everyone, including Rupa’s colleagues to general examination, as a precautionary measure” Hema Narayanan added.
