For the first time, a lake festival is being organised at Challakere Lake to create awareness among the residents in view of the miserable condition of the lakes in Bangalore city. The festival will be organised by Namma Bangalore Foundation in association with Friends of Lakes, an anonymous group that works for the rejuvenation of lakes in and around Bangalore on May 23.

Madhuri Subbarao, member of Friends of Lakes talking with iamin said, “Challakere was a dying lake, with no official or vigilant residents to care for.” Subbarao added, “Rajesh Jude, an environmentalist approached Friends of Lake (FOL) to seek help in bringing together a lake group to revive the lake. Jude is very passionate about saving the lake, who understood the way FOL works and put efforts to bring the jig saw puzzles together and it all worked magically.’’

Challakere is extremely dirty in its present form. Although it does not have any major encroachments but it is not maintained at all. “With the lake group coming into the picture, the lake is in news and the residents and the concerned officers too are now notified of the fact that the lake needs to be worked upon and must be cleaned at the earliest. Soon the officials too will share details of the DPR (Detailed Project Report) of the lake with the group and seek support of the group in the rejuvenation of the lake,’’ she said.

Challakere Festival is a celebration of presence of lakes. The activities are wide spread for all age groups to enjoy and have a fun filled Saturday morning. “Lake walk, wildlife photography, cooking competition, origami, games for children, bird watching etc, will amaze the visitors of the lake. This will increase the number of people visiting the lake and may be with time a walkers association, laughter club, story-telling activities can also come up,’’ she said.

Meanwhile, Sridhar Pabbisetty, chief executive officer, Namma Bengaluru Foundation said that similar festivals were held at Kaikondanahalli Lake, Madiwala Lake and Puttenahalli Lake. “We are planning to organise a festival at Allalasandra Lake within a few weeks. I am expecting a number of people to participate in Challakere Lake Festival on Saturday. It will commence from 7 am and concludes at 11 am,’’ Pabbisetty said.
