The BMTC and the KSRTC have increased fare with effect from Sunday morning. For non-AC BMTC buses, the fare hike will be in the range of Rs 1-Rs 3.

The state-run transport corporations made the statement in a press release issued on Saturday. Fare of KSRTC buses will be increased by 10%. Both the companies cited increase in the cost of high-speed diesel and higher payment of dearness allowance to their employees as the reason behind the fare hike.

Past September, state-run transport companies' employees' strike had made the government agree to pay them a higher sum as dearness allowance. Both the companies said the extra expenditure towards this payment and diesel purchase ran into hundreds of crores of rupees and it is to offset this extra cost that the fare was being hiked.

BMTC managing director Anjum Parvez said the company cannot meet the extra cost through fare hike alone. He said revenue by leasing space in the BMTC's traffic and transit management centres would provide extra income.
