A 28-year-old techie who was trying to get off a running train at Bengaluru's Karmelaram station was pulled under the wheels and crushed to death on Monday night. His father, whom he had gone to the station to see off, jumped off the moving train after seeing his son pulled under, and sustained injuries for which he is presently being treated at a hospital.
Vikram Vijayan, an employee of tech major Wipro, had gotten on the train to help his parents settle in as the train had only a one-minute stop at the Karmelaram station, Times of India reported. He noticed that the train had started to move as he was putting his parents' luggage in place and tried to get off the running vehicle.
Vikram ended up facing the wrong way which jumping off the running train, which caused him to lose balance and get pulled in between the platform and the train. He got caught under the wheels, and was killed instantly. His legs, hands and head were severed from his body, a police official said.
Seeing his son get sucked in under the train, Vijayan Chakkingal, 65, jumped off the train, sustaining severe injuries. A fellow passenger then pulled the emergency chain, after which Vikram's mother, Udaya Kumari got off the train and realised what had happened.
Vijayan and Udaya Kumari had visited their son and stayed with him for a few days. They were caching the train to return home to Kanjikode in Kerala's Palakkad District.
A number online reactions to the news of the youth's death centred around the fact that the stop at Karmelaram station was for only one minutes, which many said was insufficient to board the train with luggage, especially if senior citizens are travelling.
The one-minute stop would also be disproportionately stressful in a city like Bengaluru, where stops at small stations like Karmelaram are the most convenient and nearby for city residents to catch their trains considering the massive traffic jams that plague the city.
