The Indian Institute of Science has started a signature campaign along with citizens and environment organisations to prevent the Sankey Tank catchment area from being turned into a residential complex by a leading real estate developer.

A report in The Deccan Herald states that the groups have joined hands to prevent real estate developer Mantri from bridling a residential project on Sankey Tank.

Sankey Tank supplies water to many people residing around the area including many borewells. A memorandum has apparently been submitted by the Save Sankey Forum to the Forest, Environment and Ecology Minister Ramanath Rai. A protest is being planned on October 17 at Sankey tank where they plan to collect more signatures. The group now plans to submit a memorandum to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

The groups involved in the protest include the Malleswaram Residents Welfare Association, Sadashivanagar Residents Welfare Association, Malleswaram Swabhimanaa Initiative, Kadu Malleswaram Geleya Balaga, Malleswaram Joint Action Committee, Yuva Global Foundation, Vruksha.com and volunteers from the BBMP Forest Cell. The report adds that Priyadarshini Paul, Corporate Communications, Mantri Group, has said that they were not aware of the protest and the copany had not yet decided what they would with the 7.2 acres of land.
