The froth emerging from the Bellandur Lake has been a perennial problem for residents of Bengaluru.

A report in The Hindu states that TM Vijay Bhaskar, chairperson of the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), has said that both short and long term measures will be taken to fix the problem. According to him, there have been several measures put in place, including construction of sewage treatment plants (STPs), to treat all the water flowing into the Bellandur and Varthur lakes.

Nearly 800 million litres of sewage is said to flow into the two lakes on a daily basis. BBMP has taken up spraying of the lakes, while BWSSB is fixing a mesh. The Bangalore Development Authority is now building a ramp so that the water flows gently into the lake. However, it will take five years for the problem to be completely fixed, adds the report.

Sewage is also to be diverted away from the lake. Sewage treatment plants with a capacity of 398 MLD will be installed as well. The current capacity is at 250 MLD. Additionally, STPs for 150 MLDs are being built as well.
