In an indication that the BBMP might shrug off its lethargy regarding buildings in the city that are unfit for habitation and pose danger to public safety, Palike commissioner M Lakshminarayana has said that a circular would be issued to BBMP engineers to identify such buildings.

“A final decision will be taken after discussing it during the BBMP Council meeting,’’ Lakshminarayana said, indicating that such buildings may be demolished.

Lakshminarayana’s remarks came after his visit to the site of the collapse of a building that collapsed on Tuesday, killing five people and causing injuries to two, on Hosur Road, Adugodi.

Expressing shock at the “very unfortunate” incident, K Umesh Shetty, chairman, BBMP standing committee on town planning and development, blamed the landlord for constructing building that had no approval from the Palike.

Shetty said: “I want the BBMP engineers to take up auditing of old buildings that are unfit for dwelling. I expect to have such mechanism shortly. The issue will be discussed during the BBMP Council meeting scheduled for November 29’’.

The tragedy sparked off strong criticism of the BBMP by social technologist Ashwin Mahesh. “There is no accountability among the BBMP engineers. Someone should be held responsible for this incident and prosecuted for neglect and negligence of public administration,’’ said Mahesh.

The lack of institutional initiatives to prevent tragedies that took place at T Jayakrishnappa compound on Tuesday city has been remarkable, unlike in cities in Mumbai where uninhabitable buildings that may pose a threat to public safety are identified and demolished by Brihan Mumbai Mahanagar Palike.
