The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) spent a whopping sum of money on the food served during monthly meetings with corporators. This information was revealed through Right to Information (RTI) filed by iamin correspondent regarding the amount of money spent on meals during monthly meetings between 2010 and 2014.

As per the details provided through RTI, the authorities spent Rs 1.30 crore to provide tea, snacks and lunch for members attending meetings from April 23, 2010, to October 30, 2014. BBMP has held 147 meetings and the food menu included in all sessions served non-vegetarian meals too.

According to the information received, the expenditure per meeting on meals has remained below Rs 1 lakh from April 2010 to September 2010. However, it nearly doubled to Rs 1,80,070 for the meeting held in October 2010. Later, the expenditure reduced to Rs 1,29,973 in October 2014.

Coming down heavily on BBMP authorities, Kathyayini Chamaraj, executive trustee, CIVIC, a city-based NGO, said that BBMP has wasted tax-payers’ money to provide snacks to corporators for attending monthly meetings. She added that while many people in the city find it difficult to make both ends meet, the council spending money like this is totally unjustified. Meanwhile, NR Ramesh, leader of the ruling party in BBMP council, defended the expenditure made during monthly meetings maintaining that there are occasions where the BBMP staff as well as the public (including media-persons) avail the lunch provided.
