TM Vijaya Bhaskar has been appointed as the new administrator of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and G Kumara Nayak as its new commissioner by the state government.

Vijaya Bhaskar was additional chief secretary and principal secretary of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj department while G Kumara Nayak was managing director, Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL).

The state cabinet on Friday evening had decided to supersede the BBMP, in an attempt to avoid conducting polls before May 30, as directed by a single judge bench of Karnataka High Court. The term of the BBMP council is supposed to end on April 22. With the state government superseding BBMP council before the end of its term, the state government will get six months time to hold the elections.

Earlier, the state government had decided to trifurcate the BBMP to ensure good governance. According to reliable sources, the state cabinet has used the Rajendra Kataria Committee report on various financial irregularities in the BBMP during the present council’s term. Rajendra Kataria had submitted a report to the state government listing irregularities in floating tenders, awarding contracts to take up civil works and BBMP’s failure to generate revenue through hoardings and advertisements.

The state government had decided to convene a special legislature session to pass a Bill on trifurcation of BBMP and get the Governor’s approval for the same.  Meanwhile, opposition parties  BJP and JD(S), are strongly opposing the move.
