Starting from January 2014 till date, the BBMP has reported 120 positive cases of dengue in the city. With monsoon getting to its peak, the BBMP is intensifying its vector-borne disease control measures in city. It isn't just the community confined to lower socio-economic group and slums which are dengue prone, but even areas inhabited by people from higher socio-economic group seems to be vulnerable.

A team of four men have been placed at each ward who would be spraying mosquito repellant around the mosquito breeding places in the morning. Later they will be confined to source reduction at water collection places. Meanwhile, four link workers in each ward will also work simultaneously to distribute pamphlets about precautions and awareness about dengue.

In addition to this, a vehicle mounted power spray will also be deployed to spray mosquito repellant in major drains around the city. BBMP will resort to fogging only in mosquito sensitive areas as and when they get complaints. "We have a senior health inspector in each ward who will be monitoring the vector-borne disease control methods. BBMP is also sending across advertisement about preventive measures regarding dengue and other vector-borne diseases through media and pamphlets. Like the previous year, house-to-house survey is being conducted," said Dr Manoranjan Hegde, Project Director, Communicable Diseases, BBMP.

Awareness about the preventive measures among the public is still poor. Not only the authority, but also the public needs to be equally involved to keep away any vector-borne disease. Apart from the slums, even places which has higher socio-economic group of people have reported cases of dengue, he further added.
