With Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) commissioner G Kumar Naik issuing an official notification on Monday, the confusion over the civic body elections has finally come to an end. The prospective candidates can file their nominations from today onwards till August 10. It may be recalled the Karnataka State Election commissioner PN Sreenivasachary had previously announced the date for BBMP council elections on July 16.

Naik said arrangements have been made to conduct the election without any problems. “We have identified 6,733 polling stations for elections in 198 wards.  At each polling station a maximum of 1,500 voters can exercise their franchise.  If there are more than 1,500 voters in a particular locality, we will arrange an auxiliary polling booth to ensure voting without any hassles,’’ he said.

To ensure fair and transparent polls, five special election observers and 27 election observers have been appointed. “The total number of voters is 71, 80,027 and among them, 37, 68, 498 are men and 34, 10,388 are women and 1,141 are others,’’ he added.

The last date for filing nominations is August 10 and the last date for scrutiny of nominations will be August 11. It may be recalled that State Election commissioner had made announcements regarding the BBMP elections on June 25. The BBMP elections were supposed to be held on July 28 but the State Election commissioner had to withdraw the order when the state government got eight weeks time from the Supreme Court to conduct the elections.

Meanwhile, the last date for candidates withdrawing their nominations is August 13 and the polling will be held on August 22. The date on which a re-poll, if necessary, will be taken on August 24 (between 7 am and 5 pm) and the counting of votes will commence from 8 am onwards within BBMP area on August 25 and the process of election will be completed by August 26.
