The Karnataka state government has officially decided to trifurcate the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagar Palike (BBMP). TB Jayachandra, Minister for law and parliamentary affairs said that the decision of the state cabinet to trifurcate the BBMP has already been convened to Governor Vajubhai Vala.
Speaking to media persons at his chamber on April 9, Jayachandra said that BBMP was yet to clear Rs 4,000 crore dues to contractors for different developmental work in the city. “The cabinet had discussed the trifurcation of the BBMP. It has decided that the division will provide better infrastructural facilities in the city,’’ he said.
Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders held a protest rally from Kempe Gowda statue, near BBMP head office, to Raj Bhavan against the trifurcation of the civic body. The BJP leaders met the Governor and requested him not to allow the state government to trifurcate the BBMP. Governor Vajubhai Vala has promised to look into the matter.
“We want Bangalore to remain a mega city. We do not want the state government to trifurcate the BBMP on the pretext of providing better administration and good governance,’’ said former deputy chief minister R Ashok.
Former minister for law and parliamentary affairs S Suresh Kumar has also opposed the division of the civic body. Janata Dal (Secular) activists led by former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda also held a rally protesting the state cabinet’s decision and submitted a memorandum to the Governor.
