If you are a Banglorean, you of course know this.

But if numbers are indeed needed, those come from leading eCommerce marketplace eBay India. The shopping portal, which has released its Deepavali Shopping Trends based on an analysis of all transactions on eBay India in early October 2013, says Bangaloreans have been shopping the most this festival season.

Online shopping has peaked this festive season with consumers across the length and breadth of the country going online for the best deals and widest variety of products. Bangalore tops the rankings with the most purchases in the festive season followed by Delhi and Mumbai.

Categories such as home and living products, mobile phone and tablets are the best performing products this festive season. However, there has also been an increase in the purchase of home decor, fitness & sport products, home theatre systems, and car and bike accessories.

Alok Agarwal, director (marketing) with eBay India, said, “We have received a phenomenal response for our festive offers. There is strong uptake in popular product categories such as mobile, laptops, tablets, cameras, TVs, home appliances, home décor, fashion, gold coins, perfumes, kitchenware, and toys, among others. Some of the key reasons for the same can be attributed to convenience of shopping from their houses, anytime they want. It also helps them avoid crowded market areas or stories, overcome parking challenges and save fuel.”

Anupreeta Ghosh, who works with a consultant firm in the city, remarked, “It is just convenient to shop online. I stay on Bannerghatta Road. If I have to travel to Brigade Road or Commercial Street, I will waste a minimum of one-and-half hours on traveling each way. This can be quite tiring. Through online shopping, I get the stuff of my choice without any hassle. I usually buy dresses and jewellery online.”

The idea of waiting in a long queue for getting a bill, for public relations executive Sumit Jain, is a reason enough for him to avoid shopping offline. “Also, during the festival season, it seems as if the whole of Bangalore is out of their homes. I bought two T-Shirts, and a pair of jeans recently from one of the portals. Moreover, places like Jayanagar and MG Road have no proper parking areas, which is a big turn off.”

There are other reasons too. Homemaker Rashi Sinha said, “There are heavy discounts that portals offer, especially during Deepavali. It makes sense to shop from there rather than wasting petrol and paying more money in a shop.”  Interesting online shopping trends are seen in various parts of the country during this festive period with consumers buying cool gadgets & lifestyle products.

 Year-on-year trends
Overall, transactions are seeing a significant uptake as compared to the last year’s festive shopping season.

Besides personal shopping, consumers are splurging on personal & home gadgets. Product categories that have shown good uptake this festive season are kitchen implements, health care products, men’s footwear, housekeeping & cleaning products, men’s grooming products and women’s handbags.

Product categories such as exercise & fitness products, men’s  watches, home theatre systems, home decor and car accessories have also seen healthy transactions this festive season.
