Here is good news for thousands of motorists who have to cross Kodathi railway cross on Sarjapur Road while commuting: The South Western Railway (SWR) engineers who took up the construction of railway overbridge at the railway cross are confident of completing it much before the deadline of 18 months.

With the development of Sarjapur, Chandapur and Attibele, the construction of railway overbridge became a necessity since thousands of software employees and other professionals to cross Kodathi railway cross to reach software companies and other business establishments  situated on Sarjapur Road.

According to railway authorities around 10 trains, excluding goods trains, pass through this route daily. “Around 3,000 motorists use this railway cross to reach places Sarjapur and other areas.

This road also connects Hosur Road,’’ said V Hari Babu, senior divisional engineer, SWR.
The other advantage is that the railway overbridge requires minimum land,  thus making it easy for the authorities concerned to speed up the construction work without any hassles.

“Initially there were some problems. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) authorities have expressed their inability to handover the land since the BBMP limits ends at the one side of Sarjapur Road. A private realtor who is building a residential apartment complex on the other side of the road, readily agreed to handover a small portion of the land for the construction the service road.

The construction of railway overbridge will benefit the builder too since it will be an added value for his residential project that is under construction,’’ narrates Babu. The Rs22.2-crore railway overbridge was planned in a cost sharing basis between South Western Railways (SWR) and the BBMP. While the BBMP had to pay Rs 14 crore, the SWR has to bear the remaining amount. The railway authorities said 75 per cent of the work has been completed till now.

“Often, we used to reach office beyond the stipulated log-in time whenever the railway gate at the level cross was closed to facilitate a hassle-free movement for trains,’’ said Anand, a software engineer.

A release issued by the BBMP in August stated that a letter was sent to the state government for administrative approval and the file was processed for initiating land acquisition but no land was acquired till now.
