Two youth made a futile attempt to burgle a jewellery shop and were caught red handed by the night beat policemen in the wee hours of Friday. The incident took place at Heera Jewellers on Jain Temple Road in Shivajinagar.

Haroon Shiekh, 20, and Ajeem Bashir, 19, both natives of Jharkhand, are the arrested.

Police said there was a dilapidated building behind Heera Jewellers that was demolished about six months ago. The plot where the building once stood was lying vacant ever since. Taking advantage of it, the made a hole in the rear wall of the shop about 2 am on Friday.

Some neighbours woke up due to the noise and head constable G Srinivas and home guard HM Satish, who were on night patrol, happened to pass by the area at the same time. As they were trying to find out where the sound was coming from, the duo accidentally hit an almirah inside the shop and a mirror attached to it broke, creating a loud sound.

Fearing they would be caught, the duo tried to escape, but the police along with the public managed to nab them.

“The shop owner Narendra Bohra had gone abroad about two weeks ago. His brother was looking after the shop and it was closed about 9.30pm on Thursday. About six months ago, the dilapidated building behind the shop was demolished and the site was vacant. Taking advantage of this, the accused tried to burgle the shop. They had done a recce of the spot on Thursday morning,” the police added.

Shivajinagar police arrested the duo and are investigating the case.
