Welder Anand, who played a crucial role in rescuing a labourer stuck in the debris of an under construction building that collapsed on Monday, became a celebrity of sorts among his friends and members of Tamil actor Vijay’s fan club.

Reading the
front page story about Anand’s presence of mind that helped save one of the two labourers, his friends, most of whom are autorickshaw drivers, pooled in money to put up a huge flex near Lavanya Theatre to celebrate their hero.

“I am proud of my childhood friend. He has done an excellent job,” said S Raja, president of Lavanya Auto & Friends Association.

K Karthik, who works with Bruhat Bangaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), was all praises for Anand. “I am very happy to contribute money for putting up the flex that comprises Anand’s photo and an article narrating how he skipped routine work and involved in the rescue operations with the Fire and Emergency Services personnel and the police,” said Karthik.

Echoing similar sentiments, V Mani, an autorickshaw driver, said Anand did a commendable job. “I am very happy to know that my friend saved a person from the mishap. I am really proud of him,” said Mani.

The joy of Anand’s two daughters, Harini and Krithika, knew no bounds. They too attained celebrity status at their school in Kalyan Nagar after their father’s story of valour made it to the front page of a leading English daily. “My teachers appreciated my father’s efforts. I am proud of him,” said Harini, an SSLC student.

Her younger sister Harini too expressed her happiness over her father’s popularity. “I felt very happy and proud when my teacher Satish Kumar appreciated my father’s efforts to rescue one of the victims,” she said.

Meanwhile, Anand said he received a phone call from Fire and Emergency Services stating that his name would be recommended for an award. “I am thanking the almighty for giving me an opportunity to take part in the rescue operations,” Anand said.

The story of valour
It was business as usual for Anand, owner of a welding shop on Saraswathi Road, Jyothipura Layout, near Hennur Main Road on Monday. On learning that a heap of earth had caved in on two workers, Anand did not lose a moment in rushing to his welding shop to get tools to cut through the iron rods and extricate the victims. He worked for four hours to cut around 40 metal rods in order to rescue Balbir. He tried his best to rescue the other labourer Bharath, but couldn’t succeed.
