At the workshop on ‘Famine of Bangalore 2020,’ organised by the CPP on Saturday, BBMP chief engineer (environment) BV Satish said that plans are being made to restore lakes in the city.
1967, there were 262 lakes and in 2008, it was reduced to 127 (as per the DPR). When the BBMP conducted a survey of the lakes in 2010, it found that there are 183 lakes in the city.

As the first step, 23 lakes belonging to the zilla panchayat and KFD were handed over to the BBMP for development. In 2009-10, fencing of 106 lakes took place.

The revenue survey for fixing of boundaries to lakes was entrusted to two private agencies on a tender basis.

The survey sketches prepared by the consultants were periodically submitted to the tahsildars for counter signatures and getting eviction orders.

He said that a court committee has been set up by high court to protect and monitor the development of the lakes.

Periodical reviews are being held by the committee chairman justice NK Patil.

The BBMP has been allocated a budget of Rs82.90 crore for spillover works and Rs40 crore for fresh works of lakes for 2011-12.
