As per the directions of State Health Department, as a precautionary measure Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases has turned their old out-patient department (OPD) block into isolation ward for treating cases of ebola virus if they are suspected or confirmed on their arrival at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA).

With the outbreak of ebola virus in west and central African countries, the Union Health Ministry has send a strong signal and putting a check at entry of people at the major airports in the country. Speaking to dna Dr Shashidhar Buggi, Director, Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases said: "We have an experience of almost a decade in handling such viral epidemic cases starting with SARS. We have shifted our OPD block to the new building so the entire block is not turned into isolation ward. Unlike the other hospitals, the units are spacious and we have a lot a open park. Yet another advantage is the National Institute of Virology (NIV) is in our campus."

Earlier this week we had a meeting with the officials from the State Health and Family Welfare Department. On Friday the Joint Director, Health and Family Welfare Department will be visiting our Institute to check for the facilities and the preparations. However till date we have not received a single case, he further added.

Speaking about the ebola virus Dr Buggi said: "The symptoms of ebola virus are like any other virus, it comes with fever and body pain, but it spreads in a little different way and the mortality rate is high."

Meanwhile screening at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has begun since Monday. "The State Health and Family Welfare Department has made arrangements for screening for Ebola virus for patients who come from countries that are affected at the KIA" said Geetha Nyamagoudar, Director, Department of Health and Family Welfare.
