If trends of duty free shopping at airports is anything to go by, then it is evident that Bangaloreans definitely have a taste for premium products. According to the data collected by Nuance Group, the duty free shop in Bangalore airport, Bangaloreans buy more premium products than any other city in the country.

"While for Bangalore, single malts constitute 25 per cent of the total revenue, for other cities the figure does not exceed 15 per cent. Single malts come in the premium category, and Indians being price sensitive usually do not go much behind high priced products," says Anirban Dutta Chowdhury, county head of Nuance Group.

Even in a category like chocolates, Bangaloreans seem to have a premium taste. High-end chocolates continue to be numero uno in terms of sales in the duty free shop at the city airport. The trend however is different in other cities where premium chocolates are a great revenue generator.

"Delhi or Mumbai may have people who have more purchasing power, but Bangalore has a huge population of 'aspiring middle class' which wants to taste and experience the finer luxuries of life. Hence, Bangalore scores over others in the country," says Harish Bijoor, CEO, Harish Bijoor Consults, a brand management firm.

More and more Indians are now purchasing from duty free shops in airports in India. This is a departure from an earlier trend which mainly saw Indians purchasing from duty free shops abroad.
Experts attribute it to increase in confidence of Indians about their own market.

"There was a time when Indians were skeptical in buying anything expensive from Indian airports thinking it to be duplicate. However, thanks to the evolution of duty free shops across airports in the country, there has been a change in buying pattern," says Chowdhury.

Five years ago, Indians departing from airports would constitute 30 per cent of total sales whereas the figure now is 50 per cent.
