The heavy rains that lashed the city for the past few days, flooding many a road, is set to continue for one more day, said officials from the Met department.

The high intensity rain that Bangalore is witnessing on the evenings over the past three-four days has been attributed to an upper air cyclonic circulation system, which has moved from Sri Lanka in the South-East towards Lakshadweep in the South-West of the Indian peninsula.

This system has interacted with the reduced daytime cloud cover over Bangalore to cause an increase in the temperature. Such interactions result in an increase in the moisture and humidity in the air towards evenings, leading to the formation of heavy, dark rain-bearing clouds that cause thundershowers. The rains that lashed Bangalore on Sunday and Monday evenings was the outcome of such an interaction.

Director of Bangalore Meteorology Centre, B Puttanna, said the prevailing system ensured that the first two days of September alone covered about 50% of the normal average of 211 mm for the month. Puttanna said the first two days of September recorded a total of 103.7 mm of rain with Sunday night’s heavy downpour recording 79.8 mm.

The pre-monsoon or May-type rains feature very heavy rainfall in a much shorter span of time, which causes flooding on city roads and low-lying areas. Although the Met officials said this type of rain will now reduce, it is nevertheless better to remain prepared so as to not get stuck on inundated roads as was experienced by many a motorist on Sunday night.
