Bangalore Political Action Committee to train 100 BBMP poll hopefuls

Preparing to bring about change in the quality of candidates contesting the BBMP elections due due in 2015, the Bangalore Political Action Committee (B.PAC) is starting an incubator programme to train 100 election hopefuls.

Intended to enhance participation of the public in civic causes, the programme is designed to equip candidates with skills in public policy analysis, municipal administration, political landscape, election campaign dynamics, governance and the complexities of managing a ward.

To start from December 6, the programme is divided into two phases, the first comprising of 100 hours theoretical sessions pertaining to urbanization, policy engineering, etc.

The second phase of the programme spanning six months will be where candidates will have to create a vision for their wards, identify issues existing in their wards, and network with people and assist them in solving ward level civic issues.

“The idea is not just to create a pool of good civic leaders who will actively engage in ward level management and administration; but to create leaders who will engage with citizens on ward issues, and enhance citizen participation,” says Sridhar Pabbisetty, chief programme officer, B.PAC.

Though there are no fees attached, candidates will have to furnish a refundable deposit of `5,000. According to Pabbisetty, there is also no particular criteria related to either age or education to apply for the programme.

“Just that candidates should be eligible to vote for the BBMP elections in their respective wards, have a passion for civic activities, and a track record of public service in their wards. Candidates should have no criminal cases against them,” says Pabbisetty.
