The foundation-stone-laying ceremony of the controversial Nethravati river diversion project, which was to be held on Saturday, has been deferred.

One of the officials in charge of the function said the event had to be cancelled because they received directives "from the top" in this regard.

Activists who have been decrying the project attribute it to their sustained protests. "There is opposition from the people and leaders of Chikkaballapur itself as they doubt that Chikkaballapur will be benefited in any way from the project. The local leaders had smelt a rat in the project and accused the Congress of politically manipulating the water situation in Chikkaballapur to their advantage,” said convener of the Nethravati Tiruvu Virodhi Horata Samithi, MG Hegde.

“Our struggle will not stop till they throw the Paramashivaiah report of 2001 into the recycle bin.”

“The so-called Yettinahole river project is nothing but a re-christened version of Nethravati diversion project. We have no confusion on that count,” said Niren Jain of the Kudremukh Wildlife Foundation.

Meanwhile, in another development, a national seminar on the theme ‘Impacts of Nethravati diversion project’, organised by the department of applied mechanics and hydraulics of National Institute of Technology, Karnataka, has been put off indefinitely. It was scheduled for Wednesday.

The Congress workers in Chikkaballapur said the party would not risk anything at this point of time, when the elections are just around the corner. According to political analysts on the coast, the Congress wants to win back the Mangalore seat from the BJP. And they figured out that as the Nethravati river diversion project would hit the Congress's image hard, it was wise to put the project on the cold storage.
