A general notion about maths is that it is a difficult subject, suited only for geeks. To rid the subject of its scary image, an interactive maths exhibition is being held in the city, wowing and wooing all.

The exhibition, ‘Mathematics for the Billion’, kicked off at Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum on Friday. Renowned scientist Roddam Narasimha of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research inaugurated the exhibition. The models are interactive and designed to make even a mathphobic person feel at ease with the subject. The idea was to illustrate applications of mathematics in an effective manner with the help of visuals and physical models.

Meena, a housewife who visited the exhibition, said she would have loved maths had she been taught using the models such as the ones at the museum. Nagamani of Srishti School of Art, Design & Technology said many people perceive maths as scary. She said her school chose to help with the models so that they could help dispel the false notion surrounding the subject.

The organisers said the planning for the exhibition began three years ago. The models are divided into four categories: networks, structures, optimisation and waves. Thirty-odd models are on display and the organisers are expecting about 3,000 footfalls every day. Narasimha said it gave him great pleasure to see young children coming up with such creative and interactive projects.

He said a survey was held in Delhi, which showed that 30% of the students cited mathematics as their favourite subject. But when the same batch got into higher classes, fewer students maintained they still loved maths. He said the attitude of Indians towards science was surprising. He added that our country does not know how to make use of maths.

The year 2013 has been declared as the year of ‘Mathematics Of Plane Earth. This was born out of the sheer will of the world mathematical community to formulate the most important problems that our planet is going through. Laboratory problems that can be tackled with the help of mathematics. Teachers associations, research centres, and mathematical institutes from over 30 countries are a part of this initiative.
