Bangalore has one vehicle for every two persons: Siddaramaiah

Problem of plenty: According to figures quoted by CM, city, with a population of 85 lakh, has 46 lakh vehicles.

The population to vehicle ratio in Bangalore is close to 2:1, according to figures quoted by chief minister Siddaramaiah in the assembly here on Tuesday.

The city with a population of 85 lakh had as many as 46 lakh vehicles. Siddaramaiah informed NA Harris (Cong-Shantinagar).

The chief minister’s figures may be slightly dated, as the Bangalore police website says that the vehicle population is close to 48 lakh at 47,79,007 as on September 31. According to the website the break-up is 10,21, 953 cars, 32,86,892 two-wheelers, 1,33,338 autorickshaws, the rest being commercial vehicles.

“To beat traffic jams, works like widening roads, construction of grade separators, corridors, junctions developments, elevated roads, foot over bridges, railway sub-ways, development of arterial and sub-arterial roads are on in the city,” the chief minister said.

He stated that Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) has constructed over/under bridges on 18 junctions on outer ring road and five works are under progress. “It has also constructed over bridges at 4 junctions in city limits,” he informed the House.

He told the assembly that utilising funds available under JnNURM, the state government, the BBMP and the BDA has undertaken various works at the cost of Rs130.55 crore in 2010-11, Rs198.50 crore in 2011-12, Rs164.99 crore in 2012-13.

“The BBMP has invited tenders for the construction of 16 junctions on five carridors-Central Silk Board to Vellara junction on Hosur road, Mysore road to Central Silk Board on Outer Ring Road, Vellara Circle to Kundalahallli Gate on Old Airport Road, Mekhri Circle to Hope Farm on Old Madras Road, Yeshwanthpur Circle to Okalipuram Road on Dr Rajkumar Road where the traffic density high always high,” Siddaramaiah said. The estimated cost for the work is Rs618 crore, he said.

Suresh Kumar (BJP-Rajajinagar) pointed that the foundation-stone for grade separation work costing Rs188 crore, at Okalipuram Junction was laid on December 10, 2012, but was yet to start. The chief minister said the tender process was completed and the work order would be issued at the earliest.

“Works of grade separators at Kittur Rani Chennamma Junction and at Outer Ring Road will be taken up at a cost of Rs35.80 crore,” Siddaramaiah said.

Further he stated that the government intended to construct grade separators at Basaveshwar Junction Shivanahalli on West of Chord Road, Manjunath Nagar Junction, Rajaji Nagar 10th Cross on West of Chord Road, Magadi Road and Basaveshwar Nagar Main Road Junction and a flyover at Shivanand Circle.

Traffic police have registered 42.70 lakh cases till October in 2013. The figures were 28.14 lakh in 2010, 47.90 lakh in 2011, 52.04 lakh in 2012.

Traffic police have collected Rs45.05 crore till October in 2013. The collection was Rs44.38 crore in 2010, Rs50.56 crore in 2011 and Rs53.85 crore in 2012.

Twenty-nine cases of illegal mining have been detected in Bangalore North Taluk. Cases against 24 persons are registered at Chikkajala police station.

Only eight of 97 quarry leases issued in Bangalore North Taluk are operational. Twenty-four lease holders have applied for renewal.
