Seven students of a primary school had a narrow escape from death when the van ferrying them to the school collided with a BMTC bus near Dairy Circle on Friday morning.

The injured children—students of Christ Primary School, of Christ University—are in the age group of seven-ten years. They are out of danger and undergoing treatment at Sagar Apollo Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, after availing of first-aid at a hospital near the accident spot.

The police said the accident took place at Laljinagar 20th Cross in Koramangala, when the speeding van full of school children was zooming ahead on Bannerghatta Road. The van collided with a BMTC bus that was approaching the junction. The bus driver could not avert the accident despite applying brakes.

Presuming it was the bus driver’s fault, people beat him up. However, a parent, Sundar Raj, who witnessed the accident after seeing off his son (who was in the van) told the mob that the bus driver was not at fault and that, in fact, his timeliness averted a bigger disaster.  Raj’s son, Chirag, gave the account of the accident. He said he was sitting in the backseat. Suddenly, he heard a loud sound of horn and then felt a jolt. He said when he opened his eyes, he saw his friends who were sitting with him in the van were injured.

‘Depute cop at crossing’

Those living around the junction where the accident took place demanded that traffic police depute a constable at the crossing, given the risk it poses to vehicles approaching it. One of the residents, Ulaganathan, said this crossing needed to be manned, besides construction of speed breakers. He argued that traffic police needlessly depute their men at bigger junctions even though traffic is streamlined there. He said accidents would not take place at the Laljinagar junction if a traffic constable was to man it.

He said speed breakers were removed from the roads around the crossing a year ago when a speeding biker died as he lost control of his vehicle crossing the speed breaker.
