Flower prices are set to skyrocket within the next two days, with Varmahalakshmi Festival and Onam around the corner. However, what is going to pinch the pockets all the more is the fact that the prices are set to rise beyond the hike observed last year.

Talking with iamin, M Sundar who owns Vinayaka Flower Stall at Russell Market, the prices of flowers will be significantly higher than last year. “As of now, the price of jasmine hovers at around Rs 200 per kg. It may go up to Rs 1,000 on August 28; the day Varmahalakshmi Festival and Onam is celebrated. The surge in the price of flowers will start from Thursday since most people buy flowers a day before the auspicious festival,’’ he said.

The supply of flowers is expected from areas such as Anekal, Bagepalli, Chikballapur, Doddaballapur, Gauribidanur and Mandya. There will be more demand for jasmine, chrysanthemum, marigold and roses during Onam and Varamahalakshmi festival. “I sold jasmine at Rs 800 per kg last year. I expect the price to increase up to Rs 1,000 this year since the produce is comparatively less this year due to shortage of rainfall,’’ said Gopinath, a florist at Malleshwaram Flower Market.

He said chrysanthemum flowers are available at Rs 200 per kg but the price of these flowers may rise to Rs 400 to Rs 500 per kg during the festival. “These flowers cannot be kept in a fridge since many families prefer to use fresh flowers for performing pooja,’’ he added.

However, the people of Bangalore, especially women, have no other choice other than shelling out some extra money to buy flowers that are important to religious rituals. “We have no other option than to buy flowers since we cannot complete our pooja without them. The only thing we can do is reducing the quantity of flowers we use,’’ said Padmavathi, a home-maker.
