After threat from an anonymous caller led to cancelation of a dance-drama on Jesus’s life in Dharwad, the artistes and the organisers are gearing up to present it again, undeterred by the threat.

Christ Kavya, a classical dance-cum-music programme on Jesus’s life was to be staged in Dharwad on Sunday. At the last minute, the organisers received an anonymous call, with the caller questioning how they, being Brahmins, could present a programme based on Christianity. Such calls continued, threatening to stage protests at the programme venue, forcing the organisers to call it off. Now, with the support of cultural, social and literary groups, the programme is set to be staged again.

Dharwad chapter of Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (Intach) and Sri Vijaya Kalaniketana of Shimoga are together organising the event. Most of them are Hindus. Leading the troupe of artistes is psychiatrist and Bharatnatyam exponent Dr KS Pavitra. She told dna that the calls left her perturbed, not in a state of mind in which she could perform for two hours, with the apprehension of protests looming large. Morever, she said, as the programme’s theme was communal harmony, they thought it would be better to postpone it than giving a chance to anti-social elements to disrupt the harmony.

After temporary setback, the organisers are not cowed down anymore. Dr Pavitra said Intach convener NP Bhat received overwhelming support from Dharwad citizens and this gave him enough courage to stage the show. Bhat underlined that art does not recognise any boundary of religion or community. He said if the communal goons do come out in the open, the organisers would deal with them as per the law.

Trustee of Sri Vijaya Kalaniketana (Shimoga), KS Chaitra, said the dance-drama has already been performed twice in Shimoga and once in Chitradurga, and it went ahead without any glitch. He asserted that regardless of the threat call, it would be performed in Dharwad.
